Dolce & Gabbana Devotion Review: A Unique Twist on Citrus & Vanilla

Welcome to my Dolce & Gabbana Devotion review.

I had anticipated that Devotion would be love at first smell. The beautiful bottle, the citrus and vanilla notes, it looked like a sure winner!

The verdict? I do love it, but it took me a solid week of wearing it to reach that point.

As always, keep in mind that fragrance opinions are completely subjective. Many reviews have immediately proclaimed Devotion as their new favorite fall fragrance.

Read on to discover why Dolce & Gabbana took me by surprise and my somewhat different take on it.

Value for Money

Devotion is a beautiful, soft, creamy vanilla topped with a light, fresh lemon.

Don’t expect a rich, heavy gourmand with a loud, tart lemon and syrupy-sweet vanilla.

Devotion is on the more modest side, but this makes it very wearable and versatile, while still checking the vanilla and citrus boxes.

Dolce & Gabbana Devotion Review

✓ Pros

  • Beautiful citrus vanilla scent
  • Versatile
  • Unique new designer fragrance
  • Beautiful bottle

✗ Cons

  • Could have better performance
  • Some expect a heavier gourmand

What Does Dolce & Gabbana Devotion Smell Like?

Based on reviews that I had read before sampling Devotion, I expected a heavy, sweet, lemony orange creamsicle gourmand fragrance.

The opening does bring the candied lemon and vanilla sweetness right away. However, I get a spicy or green type of note immediately, as if there is ginger in the candied lemon or a slight green leafy note from the orange blossom. The main vibe I get overall is that of a light, sweet lemon tea, not a rich gourmand lemon cake or creamsicle.

I have read a few reviews that mention this spicy edge, although most don’t. The main consensus in most reviews is that Devotion is a sweet lemon cake gourmand fragrance from opening to dry down.

The dry down is quite nice; as it develops into a soft, creamy, slightly citrusy, vanilla, while maintaining a mild freshness.

Devotion is actually a very beautiful fragrance overall, and it is quite unique amongst most of the newer releases.

Top notes: Candied Lemon

Middle notes: Orange Blossom

Base Notes: Vanilla

Dolce & Gabbana Devotion is in the medium range in performance. I do quite enjoy the fragrance overall, so I have worn it quite often and over-sprayed each time. I get 5 – 6 hours of longevity, with it becoming a subtle skin scent after 2 – 3 hours.

However, that being said, it does last for quite a long time on clothes. While writing this, I actually just picked up a sweater that I had sprayed Devotion on 24 hours ago and it is still very much there.

When to Wear Dolce & Gabbana Devotion

Devotion is a great choice for daily wear for the fall and winter, and it is a light enough gourmand that it will also work during the spring and summer.

Since it is a light fragrance with minimal projection, it is very versatile and suitable for any occasion or location.

Dolce & Gabbana Devotion is priced slightly above most similar designer fragrances. While it is a beautiful fragrance, its mediocre longevity and overall weak performance do not quite align with the price.

Though to be fair, not all fragrances should be expected to be nuclear in longevity and performance. I personally love many fragrances that are short-lived, and simply re-apply as required.

Ideas for Layering Dolce & Gabbana Devotion

A few of my layering combinations for Dolce & Gabbana Devotion.

I love experimenting with layering, and like to combine vanilla or citrus notes with Devotion.

Here are a few layering ideas!

  • Nest Madagascar Vanilla Perfume Oil + Dolce & Gabbana Devotion
  • YSL Libre Le Parfum + Dolce & Gabbana Devotion
  • Kilian Princess + Dolce & Gabbana Devotion
  • Kayali Vanilla 28 +Dolce & Gabbana Devotion
  • Akro Bake + Dolce & Gabbana Devotion

My Final Thoughts

I tend to prefer lemony gourmands with a more prominent, zesty lemon and a heavier vanilla, such as Profumum Roma Dulcis in Fundo or Theodoros Kalotinis Lemon Tart.

However, Dolce & Gabbana Devotion is winning me over more and more every time I wear it with its light, slightly fresh, citrusy vanilla.

If you are looking for a unique new fragrance and aren’t a fan of the heavier, sometimes cloyingly sweet gourmands, Dolce & Gabbana Devotion is worth a try!
