7 Best Tobacco Colognes Reviewed: A Smokin’ Selection

Welcome to my review on the 7 best tobacco colognes.

As a non-smoker, I remember being very leery of tobacco notes in fragrances, and even not enjoying them at all at first. However, tobacco is now one of my favorite notes, and these warm, spicy tobacco fragrances are perfect as we head into winter.

My pick for overall best tobacco cologne is Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille, but read on, as this list is packed with some of the most popular (and my favorite) tobacco colognes.

7 Best Tobacco Colognes

Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille

Overall best tobacco cologne, Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille

  • Scent Profile: Sweet, Spicy
  • Longevity: Above average, 10+ hours
  • Season: Fall and winter
  • Cost ($ – $$$): $$$

Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille is a somewhat predictable best overall tobacco cologne, I know. But it makes every best tobacco cologne list for a reason! Released in 2007, it has been growing in popularity ever since.

The opening of Tobacco Vanille is sweet and spicy, with notes of ginger, cinnamon, and cloves bringing a warm yet fresh spiciness to the sweet, fruity vanilla base.

The tobacco is present throughout, from opening through the dry down, as a mellow presence that is obvious but not overpowering.

Tobacco Vanille’s sophisticated blend of tobacco, warm spices, sweet vanilla, and dried fruit make it a fantastic addition to anyone’s fragrance collection. This luxurious sweet, warm scent is perfect for nights out during the fall and winter.

As a side note, I hesitate to recommend what occasions people “should” wear fragrances, as that is a very personal choice. Most recommend Tobacco Vanille as an evening or special occasion fragrance, however, I am about to wear it to go to the Farmer’s Market at 10:00 a.m. 😄

  • Top Notes: Tobacco Leaf, Ginger, Spicy Notes
  • Middle Notes: Vanilla, Cacao, Tonka Bean, Tobacco Blossom
  • Base Notes: Dried Fruits, Woody Notes

Pros

  • Fantastic blend of sweet and spicy notes
  • Timeless classic
  • One of the best fall & winter fragrances

Cons

  • High price for a designer fragrance
  • Some find it too sweet

Mancera Red Tobacco

Best tobacco cologne that is long-lasting, Mancera Red Tobacco

  • Scent Profile: Woody Spicy
  • Longevity: Above average, 12+ hours
  • Season: Fall and winter
  • Cost ($ – $$$): $$

Mancera Red Tobacco is a sweet, spicy, and woody tobacco cologne with beast mode performance. Mancera fragrances are known for their longevity and projection, and Red Tobacco upholds that reputation.

The opening of Red Tobacco is on the harsh side, but it quickly smooths out into spicy, woody, and sweet notes of tobacco, oud, cinnamon, and incense.

The lengthy dry down retains the sweet, spicy, and woody notes, with the vanilla and sandalwood creating a smooth, woody, sweet tobacco scent. The dry down on this one is NICE!

Red Tobacco’s over-the-top performance makes it a great choice for nights out in the fall and winter months. This is one that I wouldn’t recommend wearing to the office, as its strength could easily offend those who aren’t fragrance lovers.

  • Top Notes: Cinnamon, Agarwood (Oud), Incense, Saffron, Nutmeg, Green Apple, White Pear
  • Middle Notes: Patchouli, Jasmine
  • Base Notes: Tobacco, Madagascar Vanilla, Amber, Guaiac Wood, Sandalwood, White Musk, Haitian Vetiver

Pros

  • Nuclear performance
  • Very affordable for a high-quality niche fragrance
  • Smooth, woody tobacco scent

Cons

  • Harsh opening
  • Bottle doesn’t feel high-quality

Parfums de Marly Carlisle

Best tobacco cologne in luxury category, Parfums de Marly Carlisle

  • Scent Profile: Warm Spicy Gourmand
  • Longevity: Above average, 12 hours+
  • Season: Fall and winter
  • Cost ($ – $$$): $$$

Parfums de Marly Carlisle is a luxurious niche fragrance that is incredibly well-balanced and exudes quality and class.

Although tobacco isn’t listed as a note, it is apparent from the opening through the dry down. The opening is sweet and warm, with the green apple and nutmeg notes leading the way.

The dry down is refined, smooth, and sweet. Carlisle is a complex and sophisticated fragrance, warm and spicy on a smooth vanilla base.

Carlisle would make an excellent choice for any special occasion or night out. Personally, I would also wear it during the day, as it is an excellent performer without being overpowering. Like most tobacco colognes, Carlisle is a perfect fit for the fall and winter, but it is so well-balanced that it can work year-round as well.

  • Top Notes: Nutmeg, Green Apple, Saffron
  • Middle Notes: Tonka Bean, Rose, Osmanthus, Davana
  • Base Notes: Patchouli, Vanille, Opoponax

Pros

  • Excellent performance
  • High-end niche fragrance that exudes luxury

Cons

  • Expensive

Dolce & Gabbana The One Eau de Parfum

Best tobacco cologne for everyday wear, Dolce & Gabbana The One For Men EDP

  • Scent Profile: Woody Spicy
  • Longevity: Average, 5 – 7 hours
  • Season: All year
  • Cost ($ – $$$): $$

Dolce & Gabbana The One EDP is one of the best tobacco colognes for everyday wear. It has a fresh spiciness and is not as sweet as many other tobacco colognes.

The One EDP opens with a blast of spicy citrus, with the grapefruit, coriander, cardamom, and ginger notes at the front. The tobacco is present right away as well, though it is subtle.

The dry down remains fresh and spicy, with the tobacco, amber, and cedar notes balancing out the aromatic freshness.

The One EDP is a classy and elegant fragrance, perfect for nights out. It is known for being a weak performer, with average longevity and projection that quickly fades to a subtle personal aura. However, this makes it a good choice for everyday wear in situations where you may not want a loud over-the-top cologne.

  • Top Notes: Grapefruit, Coriander, Basil
  • Middle Notes: Cardamom, Ginger, Orange Blossom
  • Base Notes: Amber, Tobacco, Cedar

Pros

  • Fresh & woody tobacco scent
  • Versatile, suitable for many occasions

Cons

  • Poor longevity

Maison Martin Margiela Replica Jazz Club

Best tobacco cologne with boozy notes, Replica Jazz Club

  • Scent Profile: Sweet Spicy
  • Longevity: Average, 5 – 6 hours
  • Season: Fall and winter
  • Cost ($ – $$$): $$

Maison Martin Margiela Replica Jazz Club is a sweet, warm, boozy, and spicy tobacco cologne. It has gathered quite a following of fans and continues to grow in popularity every year.

The opening of Jazz Club is sweet and spicy citrus, with warm rum and tobacco immediately present as well. Jazz Club dries down maintaining the sweet warm vanilla rum notes offset by fresh spicy notes and tobacco.

Jazz Club is an interesting combination of warm and sweet notes, fresh and spicy notes, and dry and earthy notes. It is a versatile fragrance and suitable for everyday wear as well as nights out, as it isn’t overpowering.

  • Top Notes: Pink Pepper, Neroli
  • Middle Notes: Rum, Java Vetiver Oil, Clary Sage
  • Base Notes: Tobacco Leaf, Vanilla Bean, Styrax

Pros

  • Unique and complex scent
  • Versatile

Cons

  • Mid to high price range
  • Some find longevity lacking

Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb EDT

Best tobacco cologne with cinnamon notes, Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb

  • Scent Profile: Warm Woody Spicy
  • Longevity: Average, 6 – 7 hours
  • Season: All year
  • Cost ($ – $$$): $$

Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb Eau de Toilette is a woody, spicy take on a tobacco cologne, with an emphasis on cinnamon.

Spicebomb EDT is a fantastic fragrance that blends fresh spicy, citrus, and woody notes with warm cinnamon and subtle tobacco. It has a mild sweetness, but I wouldn’t call this a sweet cologne like some of the colognes mentioned previously.

Spicebomb is a refreshingly spicy tobacco cologne that is versatile and appropriate for any occasion. It is a great choice for fall and winter, but the fresh citrus and spices make it wearable in the warmer months as well.

  • Top Notes: Pink Pepper, Elemi, Bergamot, Grapefruit
  • Middle Notes: Cinnamon, Saffron, Paprika
  • Base Notes: Tobacco, Leather, Vetiver

Pros

  • Versatile
  • Attractive bottle design
  • Fresh, spicy tobacco scent

Cons

  • Popular, therefore more common, which may be undesirable if you are looking for a unique cologne

Xerjoff Naxos

Best tobacco cologne for summer, Xerjoff Naxos

  • Scent Profile: Sweet Aromatic Spicy
  • Longevity: Above Average, 10+ hours
  • Season: All year
  • Cost ($ – $$$): $$$

Xerjoff Naxos is a work of art. This is a sweet tobacco fragrance, but it is a fresh, spicy, citrus type of sweet, not a heavy, dark vanilla type. This fragrance oozes luxury and sophistication.

Naxos is the type of fragrance where you just don’t want to stop smelling it. In fact, I’m having a hard time typing this review as I keep lifting my arm to my nose to take in as much as I can from the opening. The dry down remains fresh, with a light, airy, sweet tobacco that lingers.

The sweet, fresh citrus with the slight presence of the aromatic lavender makes Naxos a great choice for the warmer summer months. Its fresh sweetness makes it a versatile cologne for any occasion.

  • Top Notes: Lavender, Bergamot, Lemon
  • Middle Notes: Honey, Cinnamon, Cashmeran, Jasmine Sambac
  • Base Notes: Tobacco Leaf, Vanilla, Tonka Bean

Pros

  • Luxurious, fresh, sweet tobacco
  • Above average longevity
  • Versatile

Cons

  • Expensive

How To Choose The Best Tobacco Cologne

When choosing your next cologne, consider what price range is best for you, what season you want to wear the cologne, and what level of performance you’re looking for.

Price

The colognes featured here are either designer or niche brands. The designer brands tend to fall within similar price ranges, and the niche brands are often more expensive.

The exception here is Mancera Red Tobacco, which is very reasonably priced for a niche fragrance.

Season

Tobacco colognes are typically chosen during the cooler months of fall and winter. However, this is a general guideline, and it all comes down to personal choice as to when and where you’d like to wear your fragrances.

Some of the fresh options mentioned here are good choices for warmer weather wear as well, such as Xerjoff Naxos.

Longevity

Do you want an ever-lasting beast mode cologne, or would you prefer a more personal scent bubble, perhaps for wearing to the office?

Mancera Red Tobacco has excellent longevity and projection that will get you noticed, whereas Dolce & Gabbana The One EDP is a more subtle cologne, suitable for professional settings.

FAQ

What does tobacco smell like in cologne?

Tobacco in cologne usually smells rich, warm, sweet. Tobacco leaves can also smell earthy, aromatic, and woody. [1]

Are tobacco fragrances unisex?

Most definitely! I use the terms “cologne” and “perfume” to make it easier for people to find the information they are looking for, but all fragrances are truly gender-neutral. As a woman, I personally enjoy wearing all of the “colognes” mentioned in this list, even if they lean on the typical “masculine” side.

Are tobacco colognes suitable for all seasons?

Many people choose tobacco colognes for the cooler seasons, such as fall and winter, due to their warmth and richness. However, there are lighter tobacco fragrances that are enjoyed during the spring and even summer months.

And as always, there are no actual rules about what fragrances can and should be worn in what seasons. do what works for you!

Do tobacco colognes have any health risks like smoking tobacco?

No, tobacco colognes do not pose the health risks associated with smoking. They are for fragrance purposes only and do not contain harmful substances.
